The Canadian musical act known as City and Colour is actually one very talented musician. While growing up in Ontario in the 1980’s, Dallas Michael John Albert Green began studying piano at the age of eight, and from the time he was a teenager he was writing his own music. His earliest foray into performing was with the short-lived band Helicon Blue, and then later with the group Alexisonfire in 2001.
Alexisonfire released four albums before disbanding: Alexisonfire (2002), Watch Out (2004), Crisis (2006), and Old Crows/Young Cardinals (2009.) Despite the fact that the albums all reached platinum status in Canada, the group disbanded after their fourth album, at which time Green decided to embark on his own. City and Colour’s debut, Sometimes, arrived in 2008 but it wasn’t quite the breakthrough Green was hoping for.
That breakthrough came with Bring Me Your Love in 2008. The album shot to the top of the charts in Canada and also made it into the top forty on the United States heatseekers and indie charts. Reaching multi-platinum status, the album also spawned the top forty singles “Waiting,” “Sleeping Sickness,” and “The Girl.” City and Colour’s next two albums—Little Hell (2011) and The Hurry and the Harm (2013)—were even more successful, becoming multi-platinum number one hits in Canada. Additional singles include: “Fragile Bird,” “The Grand Optimist,” “Thirst,” “The Lonely Life,” and “Harder Than Stone.”
Today, City and Colour continues to perform and record. Green is currently in the studio preparing for his next album release; his most recent album, If I Should Go Before You, was another number one Canadian hit upon its release in 2015. The album spawned the top ten hits “Wasted Love” and “Lover Come Back.” City and Colour has so far been nominated for ten Juno Award with three wins, once for Alternative Album of the Year and twice for Songwriter of the Year.
