The a cappella quintet known as Pentatonix was established in Texas by founding members Kirstin Maldonado, Scott Hoying, and Mitch Grassi. The three performers had grown up together and attended high school together in Arlington, and after meeting during a local radio competition, they began to collaborate together. Their early success included an Acappella version of the Lady Gaga hit “Telephone,” which they recorded and performed for YouTube, earning them a bit of internet attention.
After graduation, the founding members of Pentatonix went their separate ways, attending college in various states, until they decided to regroup and audition for the reality show competition The Sing-Off. Pentatonix went on to win the title for the show’s third season, earning the attention of Sony’s Madison Gate Records. After signing with the label, the group expanded their lineup and entered the studio to prepare for their debut.
Pentatonix’s debut EP, PTX – Volume 1, arrived in the summer of 2012 and rose immediately into the top ten on the mainstream charts in the United States. A Christmas EP, PTXmas, followed, and the group began performing on multiple television shows to further promote both EPs and an upcoming debut album. Both EPs began to climb the charts, rising into the top twenty on the mainstream charts and selling over three hundred thousand copies. Pentatonix released their self-titled album in 2014, and the album debuted I the top twenty on the mainstream charts. The album earned the group Grammy Awards for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Capella, and for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.
Pentatonix is a group on the rise and definitely one to watch in the coming years. The quintet – now consisting of Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Avi Kaplan, and Kevin Olusola – continues to perform and record. The group embarked on their first world tour in 2016, and later that year released a full-length Christmas album, A Pentatonix Christmas.
