The singer known as Debbie Deb was born Deborah Claire Wesoff-Kowalski in 1966 in New York. Deb great up in Miami Beach, Florida, and when she was only a teenager she was plucked from obscurity after a producer spotted her working in a Miami record store. Although Deb had no formal training under her belt, she’d been singing most of her life and the producer, Pretty Tony, was fairly certain he could turn her into a pop sensation with a bit of training and support.
Pretty Tony and Deb together wrote the song “When I Hear Music,” which immediately went on to become one of the biggest dance club sensations of the 1980’s. Additional hits from Debbie Deb include: “I Wanna Dance,” “Funky Little Beat,” “There’s a Party Going On,” and “Lookout Weekend.” However, Debbie Deb’s treatment during the 1980’s by her record label was a huge disappointment; denied her own appearance on her records and albums, and denied the appropriate royalties she should have earned, she faded into obscurity in the late 1980’s.
Today, Debbie Deb’s songs are frequently sampled by other artists. “When I Hear Music” can be heard on singles by Pitbull, Shauna K, Big Delph Voltio, and Melissa Lujan. Kid Sister, Janet Jackson, Daron Malakian, The Black Eyed Peas, and Kelis have all covered the song “Lookout Weekend.”
Debbie Deb recently resurfaced in the mid 1990’s with the comeback album, She’s Back. Today, she participates in a number of revival-themed shows, alongside other female performers of the 1980’s such as Shannon, The Cover Girls, and Lisa Lisa. Although she works outside of performing in other fields, periodically Debbie Deb records and publishes new music for her fans. Her most recent offering is the song “Everytime You Come Around,” which arrived in 2009 via her Myspace page.
