The German DJ known as Timo Maas was born in 1969 in Buckeburg. Young Timo began experimenting with turntables when he was still a teenager, and by the time he was seventeen he was performing around the local area as a DJ. The burgeoning rave scene in Germany in the early 1990’s brought Maas to many opportunities to experiment with the underground electronic sound, and in 1995 Maas released his debut, “The Final XS.”
The single was a hit, but even better was Timo’s sophomore effort, the song “Die Herdplatte,” which earned Maas a residency at The Tunnel, one of Hamburg’s most famous clubs. By the turn of the new millennium, Timo Maas had left for New York, where he began performing at New York’s Twilo. The move launched Timo Maas’ popularity in the United States, and his career got an even bigger boost with the release of his debut album, Loud (2002), followed by the album Pictures (2005.) In addition, Maas released a series of compilations, spawning the hit singles “Ubik,” “Der Scheiber,” “Killin’ Me,” “To Get Down,” “Unite,” and “First Day,” to name a few. In addition, Maas has remixed a number of hits by major artists, including: “Personal Jesus” ( Depeche Mode); “Don’t Tell Me” ( Madonna); “Sunburn” ( Muse); “Special K” (Placebo); “Don’t Make Me Come to Vegas” ( Tori Amos); and “New York” (Lambda.)
Timo Maas’ music has appeared in a variety of other media, including The Italian Job (2003, which featured “To Get Down”); The Sims 2: Nightlife (which features “Neighbourhood”); and Budweiser beer (commercial, which also used “To Get Down.”) Most recently, Timo Maas released the album Lifer in 2013.
