The Dutch DJ known as Nicky Romeo was born Nick Rotteveel in 1989 in Amerogen, the Netherlands. Nicky rose to prominence in 2009 after he remixed two singles – “When Love Takes Over” and “Get on the Floor” ( David Guetta and Tony Cha Cha, respectively.) His talents caught the attention of the Ministry of Sound, and he received some paid commissions to remix additional tracks for the label.
Between 2009 and 2012, Nicky Romeo remixed a number of songs for high-profile artists, but it was his own original recording, “Toulouse,” that earned him some attention and acclaim in 2012. The buzz around his talents led to a joint residency in Ibiza alongside David Guetta, followed by a DJ Mag nod as “Highest New Entry.” But Romeo’s big breakthrough came with the track “I Could Be the One” (vs. Avicii) that became his big breakthrough; the song charted in the top ten in four countries and in the top twenty in another three, making Nicky Romeo an internationally rising DJ.
Today, Nicky Romeo is known not only for his skills as a DJ, but also as the founder of Protocol Recordings. The Dutch label was developed in 2012 as a vehicle through which electronic artists could release and distribute their work. To date, notable acts on the label include Don Diablo, Alex Clare, NERVO, R3hab, and Kelis, among an ever increasing roster of artists.
