The electronic music producer and DJ known as Ookay was born Abraham Laguna. Laguna grew up in California, where he was encouraged by his father—also a musician—to explore music as a young man. By the late 2000’s, Laguna had adopted the moniker Ookay and started to experiment with his own music and remixes.
Ookay teamed up with Showtek in 2014 to release the single “Bouncer”; although the single didn’t chart, it set the stage for Ookay’s debut EP, Ghost, which arrived in November of 2014 via digital download. Notable singles from Ookay during this time include “Yen” (with Pyramid Juke); “Blow Your Mind” (with BLVKSTAR); “The Boot” (featuring Ragga Twins); and “Pop It Off” (with YDG.)
But it was the single “Thief,” which arrived in early 2016, that finally put Ookay on the map; the song rose into the top forty on the dance/electronic charts in the United States and boosted the success of Ookay’s second EP, Cocoon. Since that time, Ookay has released a number charting singles, most recently the song “Chasing Colors,” featuring Marshmello and Noah Cyrus; the song rose to the number thirty-two spot on the digital dance charts.
Ookay is a DJ on the rise and one to watch in the coming years. He most recently collaborated with Diplo on a remix of Avicii’s hit single, “You Make Me.”
