The actor BJ Novak was born Benjamin Joseph Manaly in 1979 in Newton, Massachusetts. Long before he rose to fame as the character of Ryan Howard on hit television series the Office, BJ Novak graduated from Harvard University, where he majored in literature and joined the Harvard Lampoon. Novak frequently performed in a variety of shows while attending Harvard, even creating his own variety show. After graduation, Novak moved to Los Angeles and set his sights on a career as an actor and comedian.
BJ Novak began appearing in local California clubs in the early 2000’s, and he quickly established a name for himself. His earliest professional gigs in the business were as a writer, penning sketches and dialogue for such shows as Premium Blend (Comedy Central) and the sitcom Raising Dad. He also served as Ashton Kutcher’s accomplice on the show Punk’d for its second season.
One night a television producer caught one of BJ Novak’s stand-up shows, and he was offered the role of Ryan Howard on the American version of the series the Office. Novak’s contract included opportunities to produce and direct on the show as well, and so he became an integral creative force on the hit series. He remained with the show all the way through 2013, earning awards from the Screen Actors Guild (for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy) and the Writers Guild of America (for Outstanding Comedy Series.)
In addition to his work on the Office, BJ Novak has appeared in a number of films, including: Reign Over Me (2007), Knocked Up (2007), Saving Mr. Banks (2013), and the Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014.) Novak also recently signed a two-book deal to publish a series of stories. The first of the two books, One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories, hit the shelves in early 2014.
