Paula Poundstone was born in 1959 in Huntsville, Alabama. She grew up in Massachusetts, though, and began her pursuit of a career in comedy entertainment while she was still a teenager. She began doing stand-up in Boston at open-mic opportunities in the late 1970’s, and the success of her live performances led to a role in the 1984 film Hyperspace.
The film brought Paula limited recognition, however, and instead she found that working the stage and talk-show circuit brought her greater success. Her efforts led to earning the award for Best Female Stand-up Comic in 1989 from the American Comedy Awards, and then a year later earned a CableACE Award for writing and starring in the HBO special Cats, Cops and Stuff. Poundstone was featured as a political correspondent on both the Rosie O’Donnell Show and the Tonight Show in the 1990’s, and became a regular on game show such as To Tell the Truth, Hollywood Squares, and the radio quiz show Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! Paula Poundstone’s other work in entertainment includes voicing characters on Science Court and Home Movies, and hosting her own three-part series on Bravo, Look What the Cat Dragged In.
Most recently, Paula Poundstone released I Heart Jokes, her first comedy CD, in 2009. She also published her first book, There is Nothing In This Book That I Meant to Say. Poundstone ranks on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time, and she continues to perform regularly.
