The Canadian sketch comedy group known as the Kids in the Hall was established in the early 1980’s, by founding members Mark McKinney and Bruce McCullouch. After recruiting Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, and Scott Thompson to join the troupe, the Kids in the Hall began performing, until McKinney and McCullouch were invited by Lorne Michaels to join the writing team of Saturday Night Live.
After Michaels saw the troupe perform as the Kids in the Hall, he made plans for the group to have their own television show. The television pilot, Kids in the Hall, debuted first on CBS in 1988, and then on HBO in 1989 before launching as its own comedy series. The Kids in the Hall aired on CBS, HBO, and Comedy Central from 1989 to 1995. With comedy sketches inspired by the “Monty Python” style, the show brought surreal, quirky, parodies and monologues to audiences in the United States and Canada. The Kids in the Hall also came together to write and produce the movie Brain Candy, featuring characters from their show; the film has since gone on to become a cult classic.
Although the series has ended, the members of Kids in the Hall do still perform together on occasion. They completed an extensive North American tour in 2000, and in 2007 performed together at the “Just for Laughs” Comedy Festival in Montreal. Another tour followed in 2008, and in 2014 they appeared on the sitcom Spun Out in a guest starring role.
