Joe Piscopo was born in New Jersey and grew up in the Passaic area. Even as a young man, Piscopo was active in his school’s drama department, and he chose to pursue a degree in broadcast management when he attended Jones College in 1969. Piscopo ultimately found a home in stand-up comedy and as a comedian, rising to fame in the 1980’s.
Piscopo’s earliest gigs included joining the cast of Madhouse Brigade in 1978 as a cast member, but by 1980, Joe had joined the cast of Saturday Night Live for one of its most abysmal seasons. The lackluster performances were not due to lack of talent on Joe’s part, nor on the part of his cast mate, Eddie Murphy, and so when the show was overhauled for the following season, the two men were the only to remain. Under new leadership, SNL again rose to popularity and Joe Piscopo became a household name and highly recognizable comedian.
Through his work on the show, Joe Piscopo became known for his impressions of such notable figures as Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Robert DeNiro, Ronald Reagan, and Jimmy Carter. He created the memorable characters of Blair, Froggy (from the Little Rascals parody), Mr. Blunt, Mr. Wonderful of the Interesting Four, and Pudge. The gig led to his own HBO comedy special and a few film roles, including Wise Guys, Dead Heat, and Johnny Dangerously. He also provided the voice for a number of animated works in the 1990’s, including Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa, Batman: The Animated Series, the Pink Panther series, and The Real Story of Rain, Rain Go Away.
Most recently, Joe Piscopo starred in the play Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in 2009, at the Gateway Playhouse in Long Island, New York. He continues to perform occasionally.
