Judy Gold was born in 1962 and began performing stand-up while she was still a student in college at Rutgers University. Gold is most recognized for her one-woman show, 25 Questions for a Jewish Mother, which ran in New York City in 2006.
Judy Gold based the show, 25 Questions for a Jewish Mother, on dozens of interviews with Jewish women from all around the United States, revealing their individual experiences and journeys with family, parenting, religion, and philosophy. Created by Judy and Kate Moira Ryan, the show seeks to explore the female Jewish experience and capture it in a humorous, truthful way. A book based on the show followed, and was equally successful, garnering Gold the 2007 Quill Award and innumerous accolades.
Gold followed up the success of 25 Questions with the hit show, My Life as a Sitcom, which began running off-Broadway in 2011. The show was as successful as its predecessor, and led to the formation of Gold’s own production company, Meetinghouse Productions. Judy Gold has also served as a writer for the Rosie O’Donnell Show, for which she earned two Daytime Emmy Awards, and as producer of the series All American Girl and HBO’s At the Multiplex. Gold was also featured in the film Making Trouble (2007), and recently co-hosted the View on ABC.
Judy Gold’s experiences as not only a Jewish woman, but also a lesbian, have inspired her to be very active in the LGBT community. In addition to hosting the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time for Comedy Central, Judy has also hosted the 2006 GLAAD Media Awards and has had multiple comedy specials featured on LOGO. Other stand-up specials include Judy’s HBO special, for which she earned a Cable Ace Award, and Tough Crowd Stands Up, featured on Comedy Central.
