The comedy duo known as Flight of the Conchords originated in New Zealand in 1998. Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie met while film students at Victoria University of Wellington, and after performing as part of the theater troupe So You’re a Man, they decided to form as a duo and launch their own brand of comedy.
Some early appearances for Flight of the Conchords include a four-night special on Newtown Salad in Wellington, and performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and the US Comedy Arts Festival in the early 2000’s. Slowly, a cut following began, but Flight of the Conchords got a big boost and rose to international fame after the duo become the foundation for the BBC radio series of the same name, and then later after the HBO series Flight of the Conchords was also established and picked up for two seasons.
Since their success on HBO, Flight of the Conchords has performed at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Texas, at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, and on late night television shows such as the Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. In 2007, Flight of the Conchords released the EP The Distant Future, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. In addition, McKenzie and Clement have each made a number of film appearances, in such movies as: Men in Black 3, Dinner for Schmucks, Gentlemen Broncos, and Muppets Most Wanted.
The duo embarked on a bit of a hiatus and recently reunited for a tour in 2012. Flight of the Conchords has also expressed interest in plans for a movie based on their performances, and development is anticipated in the coming years.
