Drew Carey was born in 1958 in Cleveland, Ohio. After leaving Kent State University, Carey began performing stand-up in the mid 1980’s, winning a number of open-mic contests and gaining some local recognition. He picked up a gig at the Cleveland Comedy Club, serving as Master of Ceremonies, but his first big opportunity came after competing on the television competition Star Search in 1988. The appearance led to a performance on the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and Carson’s was highly impressed with his performance.
After his appearance on Johnny Carson, Drew Carey’s career began to take off. He appeared on Late Night with David Letterman and won a CableACE Award for his writing of the HBO stand-up special Drew Carey: Human Cartoon. He earned a small role in the film Coneheads and started working on the television show Someone Like Me, a gig which eventually led to the development of The Drew Carey Show, which would end up being Carey’s big breakthrough. The Drew Carey Show premiered in 1995 and was met with enormous success. The show ran for nine seasons and by the end of its run, Carey was earning several million dollars per episode.
In 1998, Carey began hosting Whose Line is It Anyway?, while still maintaining the Drew Carey Show on the air. The show was equally successful, running until 2006, and spawned the 2011 Game Show Network spin-off, Drew Carey’s Improv-A-Ganza, filmed live at the MGM Grand in Vegas. The success of these experiences led to Carey establishing a name for himself as an outstanding game show host, and so following the cancellation of Whose Line is It Anyway?, Carey moved in that direction. Since 2007, Drew Carey has hosted the game shows Power of 10 and the classic game show, The Price is Right.
In addition to his work in television and film, Drew Carey is an avid supporter of a number of charities and philanthropic endeavors, particularly those which support education in his home state, such as the Ohio Library Foundation and the Cleveland Public Library. His awards and recognitions include a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and multiple People’s Choice Awards, and Carey ranks on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time.
