The comedian and actor Rhys Darby was born in 1974 in New Zealand. Darby grew up in Pakuranga, Auckland, and as a young man he joined the New Zealand Army. After leaving the army, he entered the University of Canterbury in 1994 and during his time there, Darby joined a comedy duo and began performing at open-mic opportunities around town.
Eventually, Rhys began performing at comedy festivals and eventually moved to the United Kingdom to further his chances of a career in comedy. His big break came in 2004, when he was cast as the band manager for the fictional band Flight of the Conchords, for the BBC series of the same name. The role launched career which has since been on the rise, bringing Darby roles in the films: Yes Man (2008), Love Birds (2011), and What We Do in the Shadows (2014), and appearances on the television shows How I Met Your Mother, Modern Family, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Hot in Cleveland, and Life in Pieces.
In 2007, Rhys Darby joined the American version of the television show Flight of the Conchords, again as the band manager. He most recently appeared in the television re-boot of the X-Files (miniseries), in the role of Guy Mann, a rather endearing lizard-like “monster,” in the episode “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster.”
