Dane Cook was born in 1972 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cook self-describes his childhood as one in which he struggled with shyness and found an outlet in acting and stand-up comedy. It wasn’t long before his natural talent for entertainment became evident, and although Dane initially pursued graphic design in college, he ultimately found success after moving to New York City in 1994 and performing stand-up in clubs around town.
His success in New York led to a move to Los Angeles, where he found his opportunity for a big on-screen break with Comedy Central on their show Premium Blend in 1998. From there, Dane Cook did a number of Comedy Central specials and by the new millennium, he had signed with Comedy Central Records. His releases, including his first CD/DVD, Harmful if Swallowed, have been enormously successful, with his debut reaching platinum status. Retaliation (2005) went double-platinum and made Dane one of the few comics to have an album in the top five on the Billboard charts.
Dane Cook’s career has essentially skyrocketed ever since. Shortly after release of Retaliation, Cook performed Vicious Circle, his first HBO special. An extensive college tour followed, alongside comedians Jay Davis and Robert Kelly, and in that same year he hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time. In 2007, just after earning the Teen Choice Award for Best comedian, Dane Cook performed to a sell-out crowd at New York’s Madison Square Garden. In the following year, he joined Robert Kelly and Al Del Bene for shows at Caesars Palace, and his next album, Isolated Incident, was released in 2009.
In addition to his stand-up work and albums, Dane Cook has established a strong acting and film career, appearing in a number of films, including: Employee of the Month (2006), Mr. Brooks (2007), Good Luck Chuck (2007), Dan in Real Life (2007), and My Best Friend’s Girl (2008.) Cook also provided the lead voice for the family film Planes (2013) and its sequel, Planes: Fire & Rescue (2014), and appeared in the 2015 film 400 Days, which he also executive produced. Most recently, Dane Cook appeared on the Showtime network in his stand-up special, Troublemaker (2014.)
