The actor known as Jay Pharoah was born Jared Antonio Farrow in 1987 in Chesapeake, Virginia. Before he rose to fame as a member of the Saturday Night Live cast in 2010, young Jay fell in love with comedy in elementary school, performing in talent shows and perfecting the art of impersonation. As a teenager, Jay embraced opportunities to perform stand-up in local clubs and became well-known for his dead-on impersonations.
When Pharoah joined the SNL cast, he became the youngest male cast member and quickly gained notoriety for his impersonation of President Barack Obama. Other impersonations for which he is known include Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Jay-Z, and Eddie Murphy, but it was his dead-on imitation of Obama that garnered a staggering number of hits when a YouTube video featuring his performance made its appearance in 2010. Later that same year, Pharoah created a character to promote the BET Awards, and the segments aired on the network’s show 106 & Park. They too garnered Jay a significant amount of acclaim and attention.
Jay Pharoah is a rising star in the comedic arena, but he’s already branched out beyond the small screen, appearing in the films Lola Versus in 2012, and Ride Along and Intramural, both set for release in 2014. In the meantime, Pharoah continues as a member of the Saturday Night Live cast and continues to entertain through stand-up performances as well.
