Carl Reiner was born in 1922 in the Bronx, New York. He was still a teenager when he stumbled upon a free workshop being offered for those interested in learning the dramatic arts. Reiner ditched his current job as a machinist and at the age of sixteen began acting.
Carl immediately found he had a talent for comedy and acting, and began his career with a number of Broadway musicals. By the early 1950’s, he’s established a strong enough reputation that he was selected for Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows, participating alongside Neil Simon and Mel Brooks in skits. By the 1960’s, Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks had established themselves as a comedy duo, and their pairing was so successful it resulted in an animated television show in the 1970’s and five comedy albums.
In 1961, Carl Reiner developed and directed the enormously successful Dick Van Dyke Show, which led him into the realm of writing, producing, and directing, in addition to acting. Ultimately, Carl Reiner would discover that working behind the camera gave him just as much opportunity for his comedic expression as performing did, and for the next four decades he became an unstoppable force in production and direction. Some of Reiner’s most notable works include: The Thrill of It All (1963), Enter Laughing (1967), The Comic (1968), Where’s Poppa? (1970), Oh, God! (1977), The Jerk (1979), Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid (1982), The Man with Two Brains (1983), All of Me (1984), Summer School (1987), Fatal Instinct (1992), and That Old Feeling (1997.)
As an actor, Carl Reiner has appeared in innumerous films and television shows, including It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), The Jerk (1979), Mad About You (1995), Slums of Beverly Hills (1998), Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Boston Legal (2005), Two and a Half Men (2009), and Hot in Cleveland (2010), to name a few.
In addition to his work in television and film, Carl Reiner has penned dozens of successful books, including: Enter Laughing (1958), 2000 Year With: Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks (1960), Continue Laughing (1995), NNNNN: A Novel (2006), and Tell me a Silly Story (2010.) Most recently, Carl Reiner appeared in the television series Parks and Recreation and published his book I Remember Me, both in 2012. He continues to act, perform, and direct.
