The Grammy Award winning songwriter and producer Teddy Riley was born in 1967 in Harlem, New York. Young Teddy grew up highly influenced by the sounds of Harlem music, since his uncle owned the club The Rooftop, where Riley would spend much of his time. By the time he was a teenager, Teddy Riley had begun writing and producing music, even for such notable artists as Kool Moe Dee, for whom he produced the song “Go See the Doctor.”
Additional production work for other artists followed, including: Bobby Brown (“My Prerogative”); “Johnny Kemp (“Just Got Paid”); and Keith Sweat (“I Want Her.”) Focusing heavily on the burgeoning New Jack Swing style, Teddy Riley spent much of the late 1980’s and 1990’s producing smash-hits for artists such as Michael Jackson, most notably working on Jackson’s album Dangerous.
In 1991, Teddy Riley established the group Blackstreet, which went on to enjoy a number of hits throughout the 1990’s, including the number one song “No Diggity.” Blackstreet has disbanded and reunited multiple times since, but throughout the decades Riley has continued to produce and record alongside some of the era’s most significant musicians, including Usher, Doug E. Fresh, Today, Bobby Brown, and, of course, Blackstreet.
