Cordae, formerly YBN Cordae, is an American emcee and performer born in 1997. He was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, but raised in the DMV area. Cordae would have an infatuation for old-school hip-hop and began to utilize YouTube as he began to write lyrics in high school. He would attend Towson University but dropped out and moved to Los Angeles in 2018 to pursue music.
He would meet YBN Nahmir and Almighty Jay through social media and join the collective. Cordae released his first official single in 2018 and gained recognition with his single “Old N*****,” a response to rapper J. Cole’s “1985” song. He soon found his way onto festival stages and small tour runs while building up a catalog of music. Cordae would be named an XXL Freshman the following year and release his debut album The Lost Boy to critical acclaim.
Cordae’s debut would peak at #13 on the Billboard 200 charts and #6 on the Rap charts, and earned two Grammy nominations from the project. Before that, he was featured on the YBN mixtape, which was certified Gold and peaked at #21 on the Billboard 200. His breakout single, “RNP” with singer Anderson Paak, would peak at #15 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart and be certified Gold. Cordae would also have another Gold record from the YBN tape entitled “Kung Fu.”
Cordae recently dropped the “YBN” from his name and released the first single since the release of his debut album, entitled “Gifted” with Roddy Ricch.
