Black Label Society was formed in Los Angeles by musician Zakk Wylde, in the late 1990’s. Wylde had recorded Book of Shadows as a solo artist in 1996, but after experiencing only moderate success, Zakk teamed up with Phil Ondich to establish Black Label Society, blending southern rock and metal music. The band’s debut album, Sonic Brew, was released in 1999, and musicians Nick Catanese and John DeServio came on board to round out the band’s initial lineup.
Black Label Society followed up with their sophomore effort, Stronger Than Death, in 2000. Despite some changes to the lineup, with additions and departures, since their inception Black Label Society has continued to perform and record, having released the albums: 1919 Eternal (2002), The Blessed Hellride (2003), Hangover Music Vol. VI (2004), Mafia (2005), Shot to Hell (2006), Order of the Black (2010), and The Song Remains Not the Same (2011.) The albums spawned the top 40 singles: “Stillborn,” “House of Doom,” “Suicide Messiah,” “Fire It Up,” “In This River,” “Concrete Jungle,” “Blood is Thicker Than Water,” and “Parade of the Dead.”
With the current lineup of Wylde, Catanese, DeServio and Chad Szelgia as their new drummer, Black Label Society most recently joined forces with Megadeth, Hellyeah, Newsted, Death Division, and Device for the Gigantour of 2013. Black Label Society continues to perform and record, with plans for another studio release in the coming years.
