The seven piece band known as Ozomatli was formed in 1995 in Los Angeles. Currently known as one of the era’s most innovative Latin, jazz, and funk bands, Ozomatli released its self-titled debut album in 1998. The album quickly rose to the top of the Latin charts, launching a successful career for the band which has now lasted nearly two decades.
Since Ozomatli, the band has released the additional albums: Embrace the Chaos (2001), Street Signs (2004), Don’t Mess with the Dragon (2007), and Fire Away (2010.) Street Signs earned Ozomatli a Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album and a Latin Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2005. Notable singles from the albums include: “After Party,” “When I Close My Eyes,” “La Segunda Mano,” “City of Angels,” “Temperatura,” and “Can’t Stop the Blue.” The members of the band have also composed music for the film Happy Feet 2, and frequently provide music for PBS Kids and Standup Revolution, on the Comedy Central network.
Ozomatli has appeared in a number of films and television shows, including Never Been Kissed, Sex and the City, Weeds, Late Night with Conan O’Brien. The group has also been featured at multiple high-profile music festivals, including the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and South by Southwest. The band continues to perform and record, with the current lineup of: Wil-Dog Abers, Raul Pacheco, Justin Poree, Asdrubal Sierra, Ulises Bella, Jiro Yamaguchi, and Wally Valdez. Ozomatli’s most recently album is Place in the Sun, released in 2014.
