The English rock band Bastille was established in 2010 in London, founded by members Dan Smith, Chris Wood, Kyle Simmons, and William Farquarson. There were initially two other members of the band in its original lineup, but Smith decided to eliminate cello and violin from the group, bringing them to four members. Before the group rose to fame on the strength of their smash hit “Things We Lost in the Fire,” Bastille spent their early years honing a unique sound, with Dan Smith guiding the way as the group’s key songwriter.
After releasing their debut singles “Icarus” and “Flaws,” Bastille released the EP Laura Palmer, which garnered a significant amount of attention through social media. Live performances at key festivals throughout the world also helped to establish a growing fan base, and in early 2011, Bastille signed with Virgin Records and released their major label debut single, “Overjoyed” in the spring of 2012. The debut album Bad Blood followed in 2013, earning Bastille multiple award nominations, including: Billboard Music Awards for New Artist of the Year; Brit Awards for British Breakthrough Group, British Album of the Year, and British Single of the Year; and World Music Awards for Best Song, Best Video, Best Album, Best Group, and Best Live Act.
Since that time, Bastille has released the additional smash hit “Pompeii” and the highly successful “Of the Night,” in addition to “Things We Lost in the Fire” and “Laura Palmer.” Bastille has so far sold more than two million records in the UK alone, and their music has been featured on such hit television shows as the Vampire Diaries.
