Candlebox was formed in 1990 in Seattle, Washington, as part of the burgeoning grunge rock scene of the decade. Established by Scott Mercado and Kevin Martin, the band rounded out its lineup with Bardi Martin and Peter Klett in 1991 and recorded a demo tape which attracted the attention of Maverick Records. Two years later, Candlebox released a self-titled debut which immediately rose to the top of the charts and went multi-platinum. The album spawned the hits “Cover Me,” “Far Behind,” “Change,” and “You,” and immediately catapulted Candelbox to the forefront of the music scene.
Candlebox released two more albums in 1995 and 1998 (Lucy and Happy Pills), spawning the additional hit singles: “Simple Lessons,” “Understanding,” “Best Friend,” “It’s Alright,” “10,000 Horses,” and “Happy Pills.” But tensions within the band and contract disputes eventually led to Candlebox embarking on a hiatus around the turn of the new millennium. They released the Best of Candlebox in 2006, but did not reunite fully until 2008, with the release of Into the Sun, which spawned the singles “Stand,” “Miss You,” and “A Kiss Before.” Love Stories & Other Musings followed in 2012, featuring the hit “Believe in It,” and then Disappearing in Airports was released in 2016.
Candlebox continues to perform with the lineup of Kevin Martin, Mike Leslie, Brian Quinn, Island Styles, Adam Kury, and Dave Krusen. The group recently reunited for two shows in Seattle to coincide with their 25th anniversary, in which they performed their entire debut album from start to finish.
