The rock band Spacehog was established in New York City in the early 1990’s, by founding members Anthony Langdon, Jonny Cragg, and Richard Steel. All Spacehog members have English roots, hailing from Leeds, West Yorkshire, although they came together to create the band in the United States. After signing with Sire Records in 1994, Spacehog entered the studio to prepare for their major label debut.
Resident Alien was released in October of 1995 and immediately rose to gold status. The album spawned the singles “Cruel to Be Kind” and “In the Meantime,” the latter of which received heavy airplay and rose to the number one spot on the mainstream charts in the United States. Spacehog followed the success of Resident Alien with The Chinese Album (1998) and The Hogyssey (2001), which collectively gave audiences the additional singles: “Space Is the Place,” “Mungo City,” “Carry On,” and “I Want to Live.”
Although Spacehog disbanded after The Hogyssey, in 2006 three members came together to form the band Arckid. Arckid remained together until Spacehog reunited for a series of shows in 2008 and 2009, which spawned a full reunion of the band. In 2011, Spacehog entered the studio to begin preparing for another studio album; the result was As It Is Here on Earth, which was released in 2013.
Spacehog now continues to perform and record together again, with the lineup of: Royston Langdon, Antony Langdon, Jonny Cragg, Richard Steel, and Timo Ellis. Band member Antony Langdon’s career got a bit of a personal boost after appearing in the controversial film I’m Still Here, in 2010.
