The indie rock band known as Franz Ferdinand was formed in 2002 in Scotland. Considered to be part of the new millennium’s "post-punk" revival movement, Franz Fernandez was founded after a group of individual musicians began writing songs and performing together. After signing with Domino Records in 2003, Franz Ferdinand released the EP Darts of Pleasure later that same year, garnering critical acclaim and commercial success. The EP earned the band the Phillip Hall Radar Award in 2004, and set the stage for the band’s debut feature length album.
After moving to Sweden to work with producer Tore Johansson, Franz Ferdinand recorded a debut album and released the single "Take Me Out" in 2004. The song was a smash hit, rising to the top of the UK charts and bringing Franz Ferdinand’s self-titled debut album with it. Although the album didn’t fare as well in the United States on the mainstream charts, it also reached the top of the US indie charts and eventually resulted in sales exceeding a million copies. Ultimately, Franz Ferdinand’s debut earned the band the Mercury Music Prize and other industry recognitions, including a Breakthrough Video award from the MTV Awards in 2005 and two BRIT Awards in the same year.
Since that time, Franz Ferdinand has released the albums You Could Have IT So Much Better (2005); Tonight: Franz Ferdinand (2009); and Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action (2013.) The albums have spawned the additional hits "The Dark of the Matinee," "Michael," "Do You Want To," "The Fallen," "Ulysses," and "No You Girls." Franz Ferdinand has plans for an upcoming tour to further promote the band’s latest release, and will return to the studio in the coming year to work on another album release.
