The indie rock band Walk the Moon was established in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2008 by founding member Nicholas Petricca. With the addition of Eli Maiman, Sean Waugaman, and Kevin Ray, Walk the Moon released its independent debut album, I Want! I Want!, in 2010, garnering the attention of RCA Records and signing with the label early in the following year.
I Want! I Want! spawned the single “Anna Sun,” which did earn Walk the Moon some heavy airplay on the alternative stations. Walk the Moon fared better with their self-titled sophomore album in 2012, but the group’s big breakthrough was with the album Talking is Hard, which released in 2014. On the strength of the hit song “Shut Up and Dance,” the album rose into the top twenty on the mainstream charts and brought the single to the number one spot.
Walk the Moon embraced the sudden success and quickly moved from frequent local performances in Ohio to extensive touring around the country and internationally. The band performed their hit single “Shut Up and Dance” live on such shows as the Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, and Conan were followed by performances at such notable festivals as Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo. The result of their efforts is that over the last few years, Walk the Moon has established a steady fan base and one which continues to grow and expand.
Walk the Moon is definitely a band on the rise and one to watch. The group is currently on tour in Europe for the spring of 2015, and has a summer tour in the United States scheduled for the summer. A return to the studio for Walk the Moon’s next studio album is also planned for the coming year.
