The punk rock band The Offspring was established in California in the early 1980’s. Originally titled Manic Subsidal, founding members Dexter Holland, Greg Kriesel, James Lilja, and Kevin Wasserman changed the name to The Offspring in 1986 and self-released their debut single, “I’ll Be Waiting.” Their first demo tapes garnered the attention of Nemesis Records, a small record label which signed the band in 1989 and released their debut album, The Offspring. The album was given a limited release on vinyl only, but it was enough to get them to the next level.
That level turned out to be a switch to Epitaph Records just in time for the release of their 1992 sophomore effort, Ignition, which performed extremely well. The Offspring began touring, opening up for such notable bands such as No Doubt and Pennywise, and after returning to the studio, resurfaced with what would become their biggest mainstream breakthrough.
Smash arrived in 1994 and spawned the hit singles “Gotta Get Away,” “Come Out and Play,” and “Self Esteem,” bringing the album to multi-platinum status with an astonishing sixteen million in record sales. The success of Smash turned out to be a record-breaking achievement, and The Offspring became one of the most successful punk records to date.
Since that time, The Offspring has released the albums: Ixnay on the Hombre (1997), Americana (1998), Conspiracy of One (2000), Splinter (2003), Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace (2008), and Days Go By (2012.) The albums have spawned the chart-topping alternative hits “Kick Him When He’s Down,” “Smash It Up,” “All I Want,” “Gone Away,” “I Choose,” “Pretty Fly (for a White Guy),” “Why Don’t You Get a Job?,” “The Kids Aren’t Alright,” “She’s Got Issues,” “Original Prankster,” “Want You Bad,” “Defy You,” “Hit That,” “(Can’t Get My) Head Around You,” “Can’t Repeat,” “Hammerhead,” “You’re Gonna go Far, Kid,” and “Days Go By.” The albums have earned The Offspring twenty-one industry award nominations with eleven wins, and record sales exceeding forty million worldwide.
The Offspring continues to record, perform, and tour, with the current lineup of Holland, Kriesel, Wasserman, and Pete Parada. Most recently, the band firmed up plans for their next studio album, scheduled for 2014.
