The recording artist known as Miguel was born Miguel Jontel Pimentel in 1985 in Los Angeles, California. As a child, Miguel was largely influenced by his mother’s love of R&B and his father’s love of jazz, funk, and hip-hop. By the time he was a teenager, he’d begun experimenting with his own music, and slowly his aspirations to turn it into a profession grew. A chance meeting with a member of the Drop Squad production company led to Miguel’s first opportunities in a studio, which helped him to begin work on his debut album.
Miguel actually signed his first record deal with the independent label Black Ice in 2004, but his first planned debut, Young & Free, sat on the shelves until Miguel switched to Jive Records. Under Jive, Miguel recorded another debut, All I Want is You, which was finally released in 2010. For the years in between, Miguel continued to perfect his craft, working with such notable artists as Asher Roth and Usher on work for their albums. Although his debut album was slow to rise, Miguel’s work with other artists led to gigs as an opening act on tour, and performing before Usher and Trey Songz led to increased exposure. Suddenly, All I Want is You became a sleeper hit, rising into the charts and spawning the hit singles “Quickie” and “Sure Thing.”
Kaleidoscope Dream followed in 2012 and was even more successful than Miguel’s debut, going straight to the top ten on the mainstream charts. The album features the hits “Candles in the Sun,” “Sure Thing,” and “Adorn.” For his music so far, Miguel has been recognized with multiple award nominations, including two American Music Award nominations, Four BET Awards nominations, and eight Grammy Award nominations. He has won two Soul Train Awards, both for Best R&B/Soul Male Artist, in 2012 and 2013.
