Rico Love Biography
Rico Love is an American singer, songwriter, and producer born Richard Preston Butler Jr. in 1982. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, but raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Harlem, New York. His mother influenced his love for poetry and he began writing songs and raps in his teenage years. He attended Florida A&M University and would travel to Atlanta on the weekends for the music scene. Love eventually rapped over a remix for Usher and was signed to US Records.
Usher had Love write to a beat that would eventually become “Throwback,” one of Usher’s hits off his 2004 album Confessions. He would continue to write and produce records for Usher as well as Beyoncé, Chris Brown, and Nelly, among others. As a solo artist, Rico Love started with features on Usher’s work and eventually recorded his debut album The 5th Element in 2007, but it was never released. He took an eight-year hiatus from his solo work before being signed to Interscope and returning with Discrete Luxury.
Rico Love has had success songwriting, which includes hits such as “Sweet Dreams” by Beyoncé, “Throwback” by Usher, “Just a Dream” by Nelly, and most recently “Twerk” by the City Girls. His debut EP Discrete Luxury peaked at #48 on the US R&B/Hip-Hop chart, while Love’s debut album Turn the Lights On peaked at #175 on the Billboard 200. His single “They Don’t Know” peaked at #60 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #13 on the US R&B chart.
