The singer and actress known as Brooke Valentine was born Kanesha Nichole Brookes in 1984 in Houston, Texas. When Brooke was twenty, she left the group Best Kept Secret and moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of a career as a solo performer. Valentine quickly garnered the attention of the major record labels, and in 2004 she signed with Virgin Records and released Chain Letter, her debut album, in the following year.
On the strength of its first single, “Girlfight” (featuring Big Boi and Li Jon), Chain Letter rose to the top of the charts internationally and found a home in the top twenty on the mainstream charts in the United States. On the R&B charts, it rose even higher, into the number three spot, and solidified Brooke Valentine as one of the year’s most successful R&B debuts. The song “Boogie Oogie Oogie” was featured in the film Roll Bounce, further bolstering the album’s success and paving the way for the additional singles: “Long as You Come Home” (with Mike Jones and Paul Wall); “Cover Girl”; “D-Girl” (featuring Pimp C); “Pimped Out” (featuring Dem Franchize Boyz); “Forever,” and “Don’t Wanna Be In Love.”
Brooke Valentine’s career is just getting started. She recently re-entered the studio for work on her sophomore effort, and the album is expected to release within the next year.
