The American singer and songwriter Teairra Mari was born in 1987 and grew up in the Detroit area of Michigan. Young Teairra began writing and recording her own music as a teenager, and by the time she was sixteen she’d caught the attention of K.I.S.S. Productions, which signed the young artist and placed her under the guidance of producer Big Mike. Big Mike Put Mari in the studio with such notable songwriters as Disco D., Helluva, and Chaz M, eventually crafting and releasing the debut EP, Get Away.
Get Away became a local phenomenon while Teairra was still attending the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts. When Big Mike felt she was ready, he introduced Teairra to the team at Island Def Jam Music Group, who were equally enamored with her talents. After signing with the label, Teairra released her self-titled debut album, but sales were rather disappointing and ultimately Mari was cut from the label as Def Jam instead pursued up and coming artist Rihanna.
Not one to give up easily, however, Teairra Mari continued on as a semi-independent artist, releasing a number of mixtapes that even featured appearances by such notable artists as Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, and Nicki Minaj. In 2010, Teairra also made her big screen debut in the film Lottery Ticket alongside rapper Ice Cube. Although Mari still plans to continue to pursue her career as a musician, with another album scheduled for the coming year, the role in Lottery Ticket has led to other film opportunities, including supporting roles in: Mac & Devin Go to High School (2012), Holla II (2012), and The Dempsey Sisters (2013.) Teairra also appeared on the show Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood, in 2014.
