The R&B singer Jocelyn Brown was born in 1950 in Kingston, North Carolina. In the mid to late 1970’s, Brown released a number of chart-topping dance hits, including “Keep on Jumpin” and “In the Bush,” as a vocalist for Musique. During this time Jocelyn also sang for Cerrone and Inner Life, until in 1984 she burst onto the scene as a solo performer, releasing the album Somebody Else’s Guy.
The album was a success, spawning the hit singles “Hands Off,” “Somebody Else’s Guy,” “I Wish You Would,” “Picking Up Promises,” “So In Love,” and “Love’s Gonna Get You,” which rose to the number one spot on the dance charts. The album was followed by One From the Heart (1987), featuring the singles: “Caught in the Act,” “Whatever Satisfies You,” “Ego Maniac,” and “R-U-Lonely.” The singles became dance favorites, and made Jocelyn Brown a frequently featured act in clubs across the nation.
Although it would be until the mid 2000’s before Jocelyn Brown released another album as a solo performer, between 1990 and 2005, she continued to perform and record as a featured artist, appearing on the singles: “Feel Like Making Love” (with Heatwave); “Turn Out the Lights” and “Mindbuster” (with Olive Cheatham); “Always There” (with Incognito); “Don’t Talk Just Kiss” (with Right Said Fred); “Take Me Up” (with Sonic Surfers); “No More Tears” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’” (with Kym Mazelle); “Keep on Jumpin” and “Somethin Going On” (with Todd Terry and Martha Wash); “Happiness” (with Kamasutra); and “ Fun” and “It’s All Good” (with Da Mob.) In 2006, Jocelyn Brown returned with the album Unreleased, and then four years later with the album True Praise (2010.)
Most recently, Jocelyn Brown joined the British reality series Pop Star to Opera Star in 2011, although she did not make it past the first few rounds in the competition. Brown continues to perform and record both as a solo artist and as a collaborative artists featured with other performers. She currently lives full-time in London.
