Trey Songz was born Tremaine Aldon Neverson in 1984, in Petersburg, Virginia. Trey was raised in a military family, and although he was initially hesitant to sing, his vocal ability was discovered when he was in his mid-teens. His family and friends encouraged him to perform anyway, and a chance meeting with a record producer at a 2000 talent show solidified Trey’s future as a recording artist.
Even before releasing his debut album, Trey Songz released a number of tracks via mixtapes between 2000 and 2004. His “response” to R. Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet” (titled “Open the Closet”) earned him a bit of exposure that paved the way for a highly successful debut album. When I Gotta Make It released in 2005, it debuted in the top twenty on the charts and spawned the single “Gotta Go,” which also landed at the top of the R&B/Hip-Hop charts.
For his follow-up, Trey Songz turned to a number of notable producers, including R.Kelly. As a result, his sophomore attempt, Trey Day, reached into the top of the charts upon its release in 2007, spawning the singles “Wonder Woman,” “Missin’ You,” and “Can’t Help but Wait,” the latter of which earned Songz a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Since that time, Trey has released a series of albums and singles, including: Ready (2009), Passion, Pain & Pleasure (2010), and Chapter V (2012), featuring “I Need a Girl,” “Successful,” “LOL Smiley Face,” “I Invented Sex,” “Say Aah,” “Neighbors Know My Name,” “Bottoms Up,” and “Can’t Be Friends.”
For his achievements thus far, Trey Songz has earned three Grammy Awards, for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance (“Can’t Help But Wait,” 2008); Best Contemporary R&B Album (Ready, 2010); and Best R&B Song (“ Heart Attack,” 2013.) He has also been nominated for innumerous BET Awards, winning one for BEST Male R&B Artist in 2010. Most recently, Trey Songz began his foray into film, in the lead role for Texas Chainsaw 3D, a sequel to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre film released in the early 1970’s.
