The artist Sean Paul, born in 1973, burst onto the music scene in Jamaica in 1996. The son of a highly renowned painter, as a child Sean Paul was a talented athlete, and even went on to play water polo for the Jamaican national team. He enjoyed a solid education which showed promise for a good future, but his heart was in music, specifically dancehall music, and so he set out to become a performer.
Paul released his debut single “Baby Girl” in 1996, and it was an immediate success. Additional hits followed, such as "Deport Them," "Nah Get No Bly (One More Try)," "Excite Me," "Hackle Mi," and "Infiltrate," followed, all successful in his native Jamaica. By 1999, Sean began to branch out in America. He found the opportunity to work with Mr. Vegas, who was working for the rapper DMX. He scored a hit with American audiences with the single “Hot Gal Today” around the same time and in 2000, he released the album Stage One.
Stage One was followed by Dutty Rock (2002), The Trinity (2005), Imperial Blaze (2009), Tomahawk Technique (2012), featuring dozens of high-charting singles, including: “Ever Blazin,” “Never Gonna Be the Same,” “We Be Burnin,” “Temperature,” "Press it Up,” "So Fine,” "Private Party," "She Want Me,” "Hold My Hand," "Now That I've Got Your Love," “Got 2 Luv U” and “She Doesn’t Mind.” The song “(When You Gonna) Give it Up to Me” earned Sean Paul his first American Music Award.
Sean Paul has thus far in his career accumulated an impressive number of awards and distinctions, including an American Music Award, a Grammy Award, two MOBO Awards, and a Soul Train Award. He continues to write, record, and perform. Sean Paul’s latest album, Full Frequency, arrived in 2014 and spawned the hit singles "Other Side of Love", "Entertainment", "Turn It Up" and "Want Dem All.” His next album, expected in the coming year, features his latest single, “No Lie,” featuring Dua Lipa.
