The hip-hop artist known as Kool Moe Dee was born Mohandas Dewese in 1962 in New York City. Kool Moe Dee began his career in the 1970’s, as a member of the Treacherous Three alongside fellow performers La Sunshine, DJ Easy Lee, and Special K. Shortly after appearing in the 1984 film Beat Street, the Treacherous Three disbanded and Kool Moe Dee shifted his attention to university studies.
By the mid 1980’s, Kool Moe Dee had graduated with a degree in communications, but instead of pursuing a career in the field he launched a solo career and released his self-titled debut in 1986. The endeavor was a moderate success, paving the way for his sophomore effort, How Ya Like Me Now, which went on to achieve platinum status, a highly unusual feat for the musical genre at the time.
By the early 1990’s, Kool Moe Dee was firmly established as the most successful rapper of the era, earning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1991. In the 1990’s, Kool Moe Dee gave audiences the albums Knowledge is King; Funke, Funke Wisdom; and Interlude, featuring the R&B and rap hits “I Go to Work,” “They Want Money,” “How Kool Can One Black Man Be,” and “Rise N Shine.”
Although Kool Moe Dee has been rather quiet in the new millennium, he recently began hosting the 2008 talk show SpitFire with Kool Moe Dee. He has also appeared in multiple movies, including Wild Style, Beat Street, and Crossroads, in addition to television shows such as My Wife and Kids.
