The American R&B group known as Blackstreet was founded in 1991 by rappers Chauncey Hannibal and Teddy Riley. The two rappers joined forces with Dave Hollister and Levi Little and Blackstreet released its first single, “Baby Be Mine,” in 1993. The song was featured in the Chris Rock film CB4, helping to bolster its success and pave the way for Blackstreet’s debut album, which followed.
The group’s self-titled debut rose to platinum status and spawned the singles “Joy,” “Before I Let You Go,” and “Booti Call.” Blackstreet was followed by the albums: Another Level (1996), Finally (1999), Level II (2003), and No Diggity: The Very Best of Blackstreet (2003.) The albums featured the chart-topping crossover hits: “Don’t Leave Me,” “Fix,” “Take Me There,” “Girlfriend/Boyfriend,” and the smash-hit “No Diggity,” which rose to the number one spot on the mainstream charts and earned Blackstreet a Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 1998.
In addition, Blackstreet’s vocals can be heard on a number of collaborative works, such as: “Get Me Home” (with Foxy Brown); “The City is Mine” (with Jay-Z); “I Get Lonely” (with Janet Jackson); and “Get Ready” (with Mase.) Although Blackstreet has not performed in the last decade as a group, the individual members have all pursued successful solo careers, and Hollister and Riley have recently founded the group BS2.
