The Canadian indie rock group known as Wolf Parade was established in 2003 by founding members Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner. The two musicians began writing songs together in 2003, using a drum machine until they recruited drummer Arlen Thompson to join their lineup. Now a trio, Wolf Parade began performing and recording together, self-releasing a debut EP in 2003.
Although Wolf Parade released another EP in 2004, it wasn’t until 2005 that the band was able to release a full-length album. Apologies to the Queen Mary wasn’t a big breakthrough, but it did peek into the top two hundred on the charts in the United States and garner Wolf Parade some significant critical acclaim, including a Polaris Music Prize nomination.
Wolf Parade’s bigger breakthrough came with their second album, At Mount Zoomer (2008), which finally charted in the top forty in both Canada and the United States. Since that time, Wolf Parade has released the additional albums Expo 86 (2010) and Cry Cry Cry (2017), with Expo 86 being the group’s most successful album to date. The single “Shine a Light” was also featured on the hit television series Criminal Minds, helping to boost the success of the album. Other notable singles from the group include: “Call it a Ritual,” “Language city,” “Valley Boy,” and “You’re Dreaming.”
Today Wolf Parade continues to perform and record with the current lineup of Krug, Boeckner, Thompson, Dante DeCaro, and Hadji Bakara. The band has spent the last few years since the release of Cry Cry Cy touring, and recently re-entered the studio to begin work on their next studio album.
