The American musician known as Big Freedia was born Frederick Ross in New Orleans, Louisiana. As a child, Frederick was enamored with music; he sing in his local choir and learned to play the piano while he was still in elementary school. In high school, Frederick began to serve as the school’s choir director, a move which piqued his interest in producing and writing. In the 1990’s, a chance meeting with Katey Red, a local drag queen, gave Freedia his first opportunity to perform as a backup dancer under his new stage name, launching his career as a performer.
Big Freedia released a debut studio album, Dancehall Queen Diva, in 2003. Her big break came a few years later, however, when her 2009 performance at the Voodoo Experience garnered significant buzz. In the years which have followed, Big Freedia has performed on a number of television shows, including Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and her performance at SXSW in 2012 resulted in one of Rolling Stone’s strongest reviews for the event. Later that same year, Big Freedia earned a nomination for a GLADD Media Award, and was tapped as Best Emerging Artist and Best Hip-Hop/Rap Artist for the “Best of the Beat” Awards.
Most recently, Big Freedia’s own reality show, Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce, aired on the Fuse network in 2013. The show follows Freedia’s growing popularity and rise to fame, and has become one of the network’s most popular shows.
