The rapper known as Styles P was born David Styles in 1974 in Yonkers, New York. Before Styles rose to fame as a member of the hip-hop group The Lox, Styles learned to rap on the streets of New York with his friends. A chance meeting with Mary J. Blige when Styles was still a teenager led to his big break and a contract with Sean Combs’s company Bad Boy Records.
Styles P began writing for Bad Boy and also established the group The Lox. The group began to appear on works for Mariah Carey, Notorious B.I.G., and Mary J. Blige, giving them a quick rise to notoriety and placing them on the map. Notable singles on which Styles P and The Lox appear include “It’s All About the Benjamins,” “24 Hrs. to Live,” “Honey,” and “Can’t Get You Off My Mind.” After contributing to the number one hit “I’ll Be Missing You,” The Lox rose even higher in popularity, sending them into the studio to record a debut album.
Styles P has since released a number of successful albums, most recently Master of Ceremonies (2011), The World’s Most Hardest MC Project (2012), Float (2013), and Phantom and the Ghost (2014.) Notable hits from Styles P include: “Good Times,” and “Blow Ya Mind.” Styles P has also been featured on a number of works by other artists, including: “Banned from T.V.” (with Big Pun, Nature, and Jadakiss); “Jenny from the Block” (with Jennifer Lopez); “Locked Up” (with Akon); “Blowin’ Money Fast” (with Rick Ross); “Google That” (with Raekwon); and “Chase the Paper” (with 50 Cent and Prodigy.)
Styles P is also a published author; he released his first novel, Invincible, in 2010. Styles P continues to perform and record, although he has branched into other business ventures, including the juice bar Juices for Life, which opened in the Bronx, New York, in 2011.
