The legendary American record producer and songwriter known as Timbaland was born Tim Mosley is 1972 in Norfolk, Virginia. After graduating from high school, Timbaland initially entered the world of music as a DJ, known as DJ Timmy Tim or sometimes simply DJ Tim. Rumor has it that it was Missy Elliot who first caught one of Timbaland’s performances and recognized his talent; when Missy Elliot signed her first recording contract, she brought Timbaland in contact with a number of artists for whom he began to write remixes and produce material.
By the mid 1990’s, Timbaland had served as producer on Elliott’s album Supa Dupa Fly. He had also produced Ginuwine’s album Ginuwine…the Bachelor and Aalliyah’s album One in a Million. By it was the 2002 Justin Timberlake single, “Cry Me A River,” which really put Timbaland on the map. Timbaland went on to produce nearly all of Timberlake’s albums from that point on, and in the new millennium Timbaland has grown to become one of the era’s most sought-after producers.
Today, Timbaland counts among his production credits albums for some of the biggest names in the business. Timbaland has produced for Brandy, Madonna, Jay Z, OneRepublic, Ashlee Simpson, The Pussycat Dolls, Beyonce, and Rihanna, to name a few. In 2007, Timbaland began releasing his own solo albums, starting with Shock Value and then Shock Value II in 2009. Although only moderately successful, Timbaland recently re-entered the studio and is expected to release his next solo album, Opera Noir, in 2016. In the meantime, he continues to write and produce material for the era’s most successful artists.
