The rapper and producer known as Tyler the Creator was born Tyler Gregory Okonma in 1991 in California. Before Tyler burst onto the music scene as a member of the alternative hip hop collective Odd Future, he grew up in the Los Angeles area and harbored a love of both art and music, frequently designing album covers for his own future works. A self-taught musician, Tyler the Creator began learning to play the piano as a teenager, and in 2009, he self-released Bastard, his independent debut album.
Bastard was followed by Goblin in 2011, which garnered the attention of Sony Music Entertainment. The label signed Tyler the Creator in a joint venture deal with Tyler’s own Odd Future Records, and Tyler’s debut major label release, Wolf, arrived in 2013. The albums have spawned the singles “Yonkers,” “She,” and “Domo23,” but Tyler has become known also for his appearance as a featured artist on other singles, including: “Trouble on My Mind” (with Pusha T); “Whoa” (with Earl Sweatshirt); “Martians vs. Goblins” (with Lil Wayne); “IFHY” (with Pharrell); and “O.K.” (with Mac Miller.) Tyler the Creator has also contributed to albums by a number of artists, including: Casey Veggies, Mike G, Domo Genesis, Lil Wayne, Pusha T, Frank Ocean, Waka Flocka Flame, and Schoolboy Q.
Tyler the Creator has appeared in small roles on a number of television shows (including Workaholics, The Mindy Project, and Axe Cop), and has directed nearly twenty music videos for multiple artists. Tyler has been nominated for multiple industry awards for his work so far, including a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.
