The East Coast hip hop duo known as Mobb Deep was established in the early 1990’s, founded by artists Prodigy and Havoc. After the two musicians met at New York’s High School of Art and Design, they began writing and performing together, releasing their debut album as Mobb Deep when they were both only nineteen. The album, Juvenile Hell, did not perform very well, although it did spawn the top twenty rap hit, “Hit It from the Back.”
Mobb Deep’s sophomore effort, The Infamous, became the duo’s major breakthrough upon its release in 1995. The album scored three top forty rap hits, two of which rose into the top ten and also rose into the mainstream charts: “Shook Ones (Part II)” and “Survival of the Fittest.” “Temperature’s Rising,” featuring Crystal Johnson, also fared well.
Between 1996 and 2006, Mobb Deep released the additional albums: Hell on Earth (1996), Murda Muzik (1999), Infamy (2001), Amerikaz Nightmare (2004), and Blood Money (2006.) The albums spawned a number of additional rap hits, including: “Front Lines (Hell on Earth),” “G.O.D. Pt III,” “Quiet Storm,” “Burn,” “Got It Twisted,” and “Have a Party,” featuring Nate Dogg & 50 Cent.
Both The Infamous and Hell on Earth are today considered to be classic hip-hop albums and the success of those albums are often credited with the resurgence in popularity of 1990’s East Coast rap. Although Mobb Deep briefly disbanded in 2012, and had not released an album in nearly a decade, the duo resurfaced in 2014 with The Infamous Mobb Deep. The duo is also scheduled to release yet another album, not yet titled, sometime in late 2015.
