The artist known as Snoop Dogg was born Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr., in 1971 in Long Beach, California. Snoop began performing when he was still in elementary school, playing piano and singing for the local church. By the time he’d entered high school, he had started rapping, but also found himself in frequent entanglements with the law. Various drug charges brought Snoop in and out of jail for many of us young adult years, until in 1992 he began working with Dr. Dre and Death Row Records to launch a solo career as a rapper.
Snoop’s debut album, Doggystyle, was an enormous success up on its release in 1993. The album rose to the number one spot on not only the R&B/Hip-Hop charts but also on the mainstream charts, reaching multi-platinum status within a matter of months. The album spawned the hit singles “Gin & Juice” and “What’s My Name?,” setting the stage for a career which has since lasted well into the new millennium.
Doggystyle has paved the way for more than a dozen additional albums, including: The Doggfather (1996), No Limit Top Dogg (1999), Tha Last Meal (2000), Paid tha Cost to Be da Boss (2002), The Blue Carpet Treatment (2006), Ego Trippin’ (2008), Doggumentary (2011), Reincarnated (2013), and Bush (2015.) Over the course of his career, Snoop Dogg has been recognized with a number of industry awards including An American Music Award (for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist) and a BET Award (for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist.) He also has dozens of other nominations from various awards, including seventeen Grammy Award nominations with no wins yet (currently a record.)
Snoop Dogg also has enjoyed a film and television career since the late 1990’s, starting with a small role in the 1998 film Half Baked. Other appearances include roles in: Training Day (2001), Bones (2001), Starsky & Hutch (2004), The Tenants (2005), Scary Movie 5 (2013), and Dispensary (2015.)
Snoop Dogg’s most recent album, Coolaid, arrived in 2016. He continues to perform and record, and was recently hired by EMI to serve as chairman for Priority Records, shortly after the company was reactivated in 2009.
