The rapper known as U-God was born Lamont Jody Hawkins in 1970 in Brooklyn, New York. Before he rose to fame as a member of Wu-Tang Clan, U-God grew up in a challenging environment, facing troubles with the law. After spending some time in jail, he quickly regrouped and established himself as one of the most significant members of Wu-Tang Clan, impressing fans with his strong bass-like voice and what has been described as a “rugged flow” in his delivery.
Most members of Wu-Tang Clan went on to record solo albums, but U-God was among the last to do so. In 1999, U-God released Golden Arms Redemption, featuring the singles “ Bizarre,” “Rumble,” and “Dat’s Gangsta.” The album was a commercial success, rising into the top twenty on the R&B and rap charts, and peaking at number fifty-eight on the mainstream charts in the United States. U-God followed up with the albums: Mr. Xcitement (2005), Dopium (2009), and The Keynote Speaker (2013), giving audiences the additional singles “Supa Nigga,” “Wildstyle Superfreak,” “Bump,” “You Don’t Want to Dance,” “Takem Home,” and “ Train Trussle” (featuring Scotty Wotty and Ghostfast Killah.)
U-God has also appeared as a featured performer on a number of works by other artists, including: RZA (on “Killa Hill Niggaz”); GZA (on “Investigative Reports”); Streetlife (on “Semi-Automatic Full Rap Metal Jacket”); Methods of Mayhem (on “Mr. Onsomeothershits”); Killarmy (on “Militant”); and Ghostface Killah (on “Blood on the Cobblestones” and “Murder Spree.”)
U-God continues to perform and record, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with his fellow rappers.
