Spearhead Biography
The American group Spearhead, led by Michael Franti and often referred to as “ Michael Franti & Spearhead,” was established in the early 1990’s. Franti had grown up in California, where he grew up enamored and influenced by a variety of different musical genres, including hip-hop, punk, and reggae. After spending a few years with a number of moderately successful bands, Franti established Spearhead in 1993.
With music rich in social criticism and commentary, Spearhead became a near-instant hit; the group’s debut album, Home, was an international success upon its release in 1993. The albums Chocolate Supa Highway (1997), Stay Human (2001), and Everyone Deserves Music (2003) were also successful, but the album All Rebel Rockers truly put Spearhead on the map with its release in 2008.
Since that time, Michael Franti & Spearhead have released the additional albums
The Sound of Sunshine (2010) and All People (2013), featuring singles such as “Once A Day,” “The Sound of Sunshine,” “Say Hey (I Love You),” “Hey Hey Hey,” and “I Know I’m Not Alone.” Additional singles “Rock the Nation,” “Oh My God,” and “Yell Fire” have been featured on television shows such as Rescue Me and The Wire, and the hit “Say Hey (I Love You”) was included in the television show Mercy and also the film Valentine’s Day.
Spearhead is known as much for Michael Franti and his activism and social criticism as the group’s music. A favorite on the festival circuit, Spearhead performs regularly at events such as Wanee Festival, American Music Festival, Oro Valley Music Festival, and Mountain Jam. Spearhead’s most recent release, SoulRocker, arrived in the summer of 2016, and rose into the top forty on the mainstream charts in the United States.
