The rapper and producer known as Khia was born Khia Shamone Chambers in 1970 in Philadelphia. When Khia was in middle school, her family moved to Tampa, Florida, and her upbringing took a challenging turn. As a rebellious teenager, Khia found herself expelled from traditional school, setting her on a course for a challenging life as a young adult. But music, particularly rap, had always been Khia’s solace, and she continued to harbor dreams of becoming a performer.
It wasn’t until 2002 that Khia burst onto the music scene, with the release of her debut, Thug Misses. On the strength of the album’s lead single, “My Neck, My Back (Lick It),” the album was an immediate success, rising into the top twenty on the rap charts and even close to the top forty on the mainstream charts. The album and single got a boost when the song was included in the soundtrack of Dark Angel, the hit FOX TV series.
Since that time, Khia has released the albums: Gangstress (2006), Nasti Muzik (2008), and MotorMouf aka Khia Shamone (2012.) The albums spawned the additional singles: “Snatch the Cat Back,” “What They Do,” “Be Your Lady,” “Been a Bad Girl,” and “You Deserve.” Khia has also appeared as a featured artist on Janet Jackson’s song “So Excited,” which was released in 2006 and rose to the top twenty on the R&B charts.
Today, Khia continues to perform and record. Her most recent album, Love Locs, was released in 2014 and another is scheduled for release in 2015. Khia is also the author of two books: Love Yourself Hoe (2014) and Ignoring the Signs (2014.)
