The Canadian hip-hop artist known as Tory Lanez was born Daystar Peterson in 1992 in Toronto, Ontario. Peterson moved to Florida with his family when he was a child, but after his mothers untimely death to a rare disease when he was a child, he moved around frequently with his father, who took up work as a minister and missionary.
Daystar spent his formative years living with his father and new stepmom in Atlanta, Georgia, and then later with his older brother in Queens, New York, before returning to Toronto where he was pretty much on his own at age fifteen. By the time he was sixteen, Peterson had dropped out of school and adopted the moniker “Tory Lanez.” By seventeen, he’d started rapping, performing wherever the opportunity presented itself and posting videos of his performances to YouTube.
After Sean Kingston caught sight of one of his videos, he contacted Lanez and invited him to meet up with him while on tour. The breakthrough opportunity was just what Lanez needed; within a short while, he’d started releasing his music on mixtapes, averaging at least two per year from 2009 to 2015. Between 2013 and 2015 he also appeared as a featured artist on a number of singles, including: “All Away” (with Elhae and Rick Ross); “Anyway” (with Sage the Gemini, DJ Carisma, and Eric Bellinger); “All Down” (with Hi-Tone); and “Slide” (with Packy.)
Tory Lanez signed to Interscope Records and released his debut album, I Told You, in 2016. The album was an enormous success, rising into the top five in both the United States and Canada, and into the top forty internationally. I Told You also earned Tory Lanez multiple award nominations, including a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song (for “Luv.”) Other nominations include three Juno Award nominations for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Rap Recording of the Year, and Fan Choice Award; a BET Award nomination for Best New Artist; and a BET Hip Hop Award nomination for Best New Hip Hop Act.
Clearly, Tory Lanez is an arist on the rise and one to watch in the coming years. He most recently appeared as a featured artist on Meek Mill’s top twenty hit, “Litty,” and on Maxwell’s single “Es rollt.”
