The Los Angeles based musician known as Fatlip was born Derrick Stewart in 1969. Known for a conversational style in his vocal delivery, Fatlip entered the music scene as a member of the hip-hop group The Pharcyde, appearing on the group’s critically lauded album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde. He left the group in the mid 2000’s to launch a solo career.
The album The Loneliest Punk, Fatlip’s solo debut, arrived in 2005 and featured the hit single “What’s Up, Fatlip.” The album earned a bit boost after the song was included in the film Youth in Revolt, but as of today it remains Fatlip’s singular album effort, although Fatlip has been very active in collaborative projects since that time. Since The Loneliest Punk, Fatlip has appeared as a guest artists on the songs: “The Salmon Dance” (with The Chemical Brothers); “Dream and Imaginate” (with The Wascals); “Luxury Pool” (with Neon Neon); “Strange Enough” (with Karen O and Ol’ Dirty Bastard); and “Hip Hop,” recorded with his former Pharcyde member, Tre Hardson. Fatlip and Hardson have also reunited to perform together recently.
Currently, FatLip is reported to have returned to the studio to work with famed producer Mnemonic on another album.
