The rapper and actor known as Mystikal was born Michael Lawrence Tyler in 1970. Michael grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, and found himself influenced by the music of the city as a child. By the time he was in his mid-twenties, he’d adopted the moniker Mystikal and signed to Jive Records as a recording artist.
Although Mystikal did not stay with Jive for long, he issued his debut album, Mind of Mystikal, with the label in 1995. After switching to No Limit Records, he followed up his debut with Unpredictable (1996) and Ghetto Fabulous (1998.) But it was Mystikal’s fourth album, Let’s Get Ready, which brought him significant popularity, with the hit singles “Shake Ya Ass” and “Danger (Been So Long.)” The latter rose to the top of the R&B/hip-hop charts and brought the album into the mainstream charts as well.
During this time, Mystikal also appeared on a number of rap & R&B hits for other artists, including: “Make ‘Em Say Uhh” (with Master P); “It Ain’t My Fault” (with Silkk the Shocker); “Woof” (with Snoop Dogg); “Stutter” (with Joe); “Don’t Stop (Funkin’ 4 Jamaica)” (with Mariah Carey); and “Move Bitch” (with Ludacris.) Mystikal became as well-known for his contributions to the works of other performers as he did for his own music, which performed well throughout the 1990’s.
Mystikal released on additional album – Tarantula – in 2001 before a series of legal troubles took him away from the music scene for over a decade. But he recently resurfaced with the album Original in 2014, and now Mystikal has plans to re-launch his career with additional performance and projects scheduled for the near future.
