The American hip hop artist known as Kodak Black was born Dieuson Octave in 1997 in Florida. Octave grew up in the Pompano Beach area of the state, living in a public housing project with his parents, who had immigrated from Haiti. As a teenager, Dieuson’s life was rather tumultuous; he was arrested multiple times on a variety of charges, mostly drug-related, and he spent some time in youth detention centers.
Octave adopted the moniker Kodak Black quite early; he had started in his first rap group as a teenager, first under the name “J-Black.” By the early 2010’s, he had started recording and releasing mixtapes independently as Kodak Black, garnering some significant attention from record labels. Between 2013 and 2016, Kodak Black released a number of mixtapes, including Project Baby (2013), Institution (2015), and Lil B.I.G. Pac (2016.) Notable singles included: “No Flockin,” “Skrilla,” “Skrt,” and “Like Dat.” He also contributed vocals to the French Montana hit “Lockjaw.”
But it was the 2017 release of the single “Tunnel Vision” that truly put Kodak Black on the map. The single rose into the top ten on multiple charts, rising to the number six spot on the mainstream charts and into the top twenty on the Canadian mainstream charts. Since that time, Kodak Black has been preparing for his debut studio album, Painting Pictures, expected to release in 2017. He also recently appeared on the Boogie wit da Hoodie single “Drowning.”
